Episode 92
SOFT SURFACE
The thoughts for this episode have been swirling around in my head for months. It started a while back when I saw an Instagram post criticizing people who are “apolitical”. Naturally, I can’t find that original post and I don’t know the exact wording but the takeaway was that silence is a political stance and not being political is a privilege.
I don’t write about politics. Do you know why? Because no one should care what I think. No one should be getting their insights about current events from me. I have no desire to virtue signal how much I care by parading my personal opinions all over social media. And here’s a few hot tips… If you are peddling shoes or skincare, I don’t give a shit who you voted for. If you are a celebrity or professional actor, I don’t care what you believe about ICE. If you are a lifestyle mommy blogger, you can keep your thoughts about the Epstein files off of my Facebook feed. I love you, I respect you, I appreciate your content but I don’t care what you think about any of those things.
Guess how much posting about your angry thoughts helps move the needle? The answer is zero. Guess how many times someone said “Wow! Your nonstop political Facebook posts finally turned me around to your way of thinking!” No one. Ever. And I say all of this with love. But I just wish we could all take a step back and remember that being an armchair activist from the safety of your sofa doesn’t actually help anyone.
My little hippie heart asks- please love one another. It’s so much easier than the alternative. We all have reasons for our beliefs and for centuries we’ve been liking each other anyway. Cancelling everyone who doesn’t align with our own personal opinions is a dangerous game with long term implications.
And so, here’s what I believe. One. None of it is ‘real’ and our brains weren’t designed to handle knowing it all. Two. We are constantly being manipulated by what mainstream news media and the algorithm want us to see, hear and know. Three. Unless I see it live in person with my own two eyes, I don’t believe it. Four. Nearly all of us are just trying our best and wanting good things for the people we love. Five. Everyone is fighting a battle. Kindness is always the path.
